My friend and I are going to do a video tonight reflecting on 2009 so that next year we can look back on something other than pictures :)

What are some questions we can answer that will help us reflect on the year?

Some questions we already have: (feel free to answer these too!)
-Were there any new additions to your family?
-What was one of the best movies you saw this year?
-Has your physical appearance changed at all? How?
-What did you do for your birthday?
-Did you go on any trips this year?

1. On a scale of 1 to 10, how awesome is this song?
2. What is it about being these fellows that makes them scream so much? Serious and non-serious answers welcome
3. Do you like song with autotune?
4. Does pointless screaming make autotune more bearable?
5. Ladies, in the end were you a little disappointed you weren't going home with these cool dudes? Be honest
6. There's a man in the pig suit in the video. Does being into furries make the band more or less likable?
7. In the end of the video, who's more offended? Muslims and Jews because of the pig mascot, or everybody else who watched it?

So, say it's dinnertime. You have a choice between the second half of the enormous BLT you had for lunch (seriously, this thing has about 4" of bacon on it), or making yourself a frozen pepperoni pizza. Which do you choose?

It seems like 2009 has been a really shitty year for just about everyone I know. Will you tell me something good about 2009?

abandonedplaces

[dr_is_in]
So this is my first post here, partially sharing about this place, partially to ask advice. There is place near where that used to be called the Binghamton Inebriate Asylum. Its construction began in 1858, was converted to an insane asylum in 1879, closed in 1993 after part of the building collapsed. It was listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1997 and in 1999 it was listed as one of NY states most endangered buildings. Its located on the property of the new psychiatric hospital, so security and such is very vigilant and they chase people off even just taking pictures of the outside. I am new to all of this, but my question is how does one go about getting permission to photograph a property if you need to? I would love to get inside and take photos, but as I mentioned, security keeps a close eye on the place and its fenced off pretty well.

I can share some stuff from the website for there. )

Another NYE post. [Dec. 31st, 2009|03:45 pm]

[devolute]
So this band Quasi is doing a show where they're covering songs by The Who for New Year's Eve at a venue in town. It's sold out, but a couple of friends were going to drive up and try to get tickets since they always save some at the box office for the day of the show. They decided they don't have the money to do so, so I'm left with no plans.

1. Would it be lame to go try to get tickets (which will involve lots of waiting in line) just to go to a show alone on New Years? I won't even be able to drink more than maybe one beer, since I'll be driving home afterward.

2. Should I instead just hang out with my parents and sing karaoke and play board games or something?

3. For those of you alone tonight, what are your plans?

Dear TQC,

I am in a foul mood and about to inflict myself on others for New Years. What do you do/look at to cheer yourself up in a limited amount of time?

Oh wise and great TQC,

I'm making plush critters for my 4 month-old nephews. Would button eyes be too dangerous? They'd be sewn into 2 layers of fleece fabric.

Embroidering is out, and felt eyes are possible, but a pain in the butt.

Thanks!

ack, fine. felt it is!

Mother, pointing out seat to four-year-old daughter: Sit down there, honey. Don't touch anything.
Daughter, indicating her seat: Did you see? I touched it and then I licked my hand.

You kids stay safe n' warm out there tonight, y'hear? And best wishes to each and every one of you for health, wealth, love & happiness this coming year...

As for me, I'm going to enjoy a quiet dinner with my wife & kids, maybe rent a movie and - most of all - try to put 2009 behind me forever. What a shitty, god-damned year it's been. Yeesh.

Our first dives :) [Dec. 29th, 2009|10:58 pm]

dumpsterdiving

[beachrose1920]
Yup, my roommate and I went on our first few dives, starting just before Xmas.  I did a lot of reading up on the web first, and decided that less conflict suited me better, so we go at night.

Our first dive, we brought home 4 grocery bags of stuff from Trader Joe's.  I wish we'd taken pictures - it was some serious bounty!  Lots of fresh meat, cucumbers, bananas, apples, 4 boxes of mushrooms, and some lovely yellow and red peppers.

I went back on my own a few days later, and brought back some frozen lasagna, some pre-packaged salads, flowers, and some holly for Xmas!

A couple of nights ago we got more bananas, some more meats and fish (including packages of marinated meats), and some bread.  We kept that haul short, since the night shift arrived.

I've had to teach my roomie to go for variety instead of quantity - the bins there are always overflowing, we can always get more.  Better to have the variety than to have 30 bananas alone!

Will try to post pics next bounty - but I get a little tired by the time we get home!

I'd like to find a few more divers in my hood who are reliable & neat - I want to share the bounty there, but I don't want to intro people to the bin who might mess it up & end up seeing the bin locked!

As the New Year arrives, I'm mindful of those lines by Minnie Harkins, quoted by King George VI at Christmas 1939 in the shadow of war and the unknown that lay ahead:

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year
'Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.'
And he replied,
'Go into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God -
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way!'

May the God who knows and loves you, walk with you and watch over you, whatever the new year brings. And may God's grace and goodness accompany you. And so, may blessings be with you, and with us all. All who live on this earth, and for whom we work and pray.
